Using Collaborative Documents

Creating opportunities for annotation can be a great way to encourage active reading of digital text. Unfortunately, many teachers may not have access to online reading platforms with annotation tools built in. You can, however, improvise. If you have access to Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or another collaborative document tool, you have a whole range of annotation tools at your fingertips for free.

By copying a digital text into a collaborative document (making sure to provide proper attribution and ensuring that you are not breaking copyright or fair use in the process), you enable students to use tools such as comments, highlights, or even writing in the document to mark up the text as they read.
